Traditional Hymns
Used for generations
Until mid 1960s they were only used in devotional services

3.1 Psalms and the use of music in worship
The Value of Music in Worship
Music has always been used as a praise of God
Many composers have written for the Mass or other services
Bishops at the Second Vatican Council stressed that music:
Unites people in praise
Increases the beauty of worship
Helps people feel more involved
Fourth century CE, St Augustine of Hippo said "For he who sings praise does not only praise but also praises joyfully"
Singing is a physical action as well as an emotional one
It inspires people to become fully involved with God
The Psalms
Old Testament contain the book of Psalms
150 pieces of poetry that were written down to be sung in Jewish prayer
They form he backbone of the Divine Office that every priest, monk or nun must recite
Psalms are centred round the praise of God
Touch on all aspects of life: sickness, forgiveness etc.
Singing for joy is one of the recurring themes of the psalms
Used during the first and second reading
3.4 Triune God explained in the Bible
The Concept of the Triune God
To refer to the belief of three Persons in one God two terms are used
The Triune God- within one God there is a three-ness
The Trinity- focuses on the distinctive qualities of each of the three Persons
These terms reinforce each other
The Old Testament: Deuteronomy 6:4
"The Lord is our God, the Lord alone"

This passage states the oneness of God
Christians accept there is one God, however though teachings they have come to believed there are three Persons in this one God
The New Testament: Matthew 3:16-17
Since God is infinite there can only be one God
God has revealed himself in three Persons: the Father, Son and Holy Spirir
It is difficult for Christians to understand- viewed as a mystery

Spirit comes down on Jesus and stays with him- reflects on the intimate relationship between Jesus and the Spirit

So the Son of God has always existed and became man through Jesus. The Father and Son are one
The New Testament: Galatians 4:6
When a Christian is baptised, they become a child of God and a brother or sister of Jesus
God the Father pours out the same Holy Spirit that unites God the Father and God the Holy Spirit
This fills the person with grace and with the life and power of the dynamic, living God

3.5 The Trinity in the Nicene Creed and Genesis 1
The Nicene Creed
A statement of faith that presents what Catholics believe
"I believe in one God, God the Father almighty "
"The only begotten son"
"The Holy Spirit the Lord the Giver of Life"
Teaches about each person in the Trinity
God the Father
Almighty creator of all things
Source of all life
God the Son
Christ- the only begotten son
Never a point when he didn't exist
He is consubstantial with the Father- no distinction between the Father and Son
Took on Human limitations
Became human out of love for people, to save humans from eternal separation from God
Jesus rose from the dead and ascended to heaven where he takes his place as Son of God, as judge and as Lord of all- he'd always been God
God the Holy Spirit
The Spirit or breath of God gives life to all things
Spirit comes from both the Father and the Son uniting them in all things
Spirit is equal in majesty, power and worship to the Father and the Son
It inspires people to let them know the will of God

Hebrew word translated as breath or spirit- presence of the Holy Spirit
God created by his Word. God the Son is the Word of God, the creative power coming from the Father but distinct from the Father and the Spirit

3.3 Acclamations used in the mass
The Gloria
Based on the hymn of the angels
A hymn of praise of God's glorying goodness
Not said during Advent and Lent as they are sorrowful times of the year
There are contemporary and plainchant versions
Alleluia
Means praise God- used before the reading of the Gospel at Mass
Sung three times to announce the resurrection of Jesus and his teachings
Hymn of joy, triumph and praise
Not used in times of sorrow
Eucharistic Acclamations
Sanctus
Means Holy
Sung before the Eucharistic prayer at every Mass
"Holy holy holy is the Lord of hosts, the whole earth is full of his glory"
Holy being repeated three times represents the trinity
The Mystery Of Faith
Sung immediately after bread and wine consecrated
Acceptance that the consecration has taken place and that they believe in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus
Sung as a response to God's loving sacrifice of Jesus his only son
3.6 The Influence of the Trinity on Christians today
How belief in the Trinity influences Christians Today
Life of Trinity flows from the love of the Father and Son for each other which is the Holy Spirit
This love flows outward into the lives and hearts of all believers as grace

The Church sends people out to care for those in need
E.g. there are many charity organisations whose mission is to help poor people develop better lifestyles- provide education and medical care etc.
