Chronic Heart Failure
-
History ,Examination and Referrals
The person needs to give a detailed family history , this is to check if there is any family link with chronic heart failure as this will raise the chances of having one. A clinical examination and tests need to be done to clarify heart failure .
If the person is been suspected for heart failure they need to be referred to have an transthoracic Doppler 2D echocardiography. During this process the person will have transducer which will be placed on the chest and upper abdomen , the machine will be using high-frequency sound waves which is converted to electricals implused that show a picute of the heart a Doppler will show the motion of blood through the heart. After this test to paitent needs to be seen by a specialist which will be consultant cardiologis with 2 weeks o discuss about the results and the next steps.
The patient needs to have their serum natriuretic peptides measured, this tes will check the amount of BPN hormone in the blood. The BNP is made by the heart and shows how well the heart is working. IIf the heart has to work harder over long period of time than more BNP is released which mean that there is a heart failure.
An ECG will be done , this test will be check the hearts rhythm whether there is a irregular or steady and electrical activity. An ECG will also give the timings and strenght of the electrical signals. The ECG test will show the walls of the chambers are thicker than normal which will make it harder for the heart to pump blood therefor will indicate current or previous heart attack.
If the BNP levels is above 400 pg/ml than the patient needs to be referred to transthoracic Doppler 2D echocardiography. Than to a specialist after two weeks for an assessment.
