Physics
Waves
What is a wave?
A wave is an oscillation or a vibration
There are 2 different types of wave - transverse and longitudinal
A transverse wave has an oscillation of 90 degrees to the direction of travel, does not need a medium to travel through, has a trough and peak
A longitudinal wave : has rarefaction and compressions, needs a medium to travel through
Forces
What is a force?
A force is a push or pull. It can affect different things in different ways
Examples of force
Air resistance - slows moving objects going through the air down
Friction
A force that slows things down by gripping them. It also causes heat
Upthrust
Thrusts things above it upwards
Water resistance - slows moving objects in water down
A drag force is a force that slows things down due to the particles getting in the way of the moving object
Types of force
A drag force
This is a force that slows moving things down
Reaction
This is a force that counters another force applied against it
Tension force
A pulling force when a spring or cable is pulled down
Weight and gravity
We measure force in Newtons. This is the object's relation to gravity. Weight is also measured in Newtons. Weight is affected by gravity. The stronger the gravitational force, the larger the weight.
Weight = mass x gravitational field strength
Mass
Mass is the amount of 'stuff' inside you. Your mass does not change when you travel to other planets
