Endocrine System - Sheep
The endocrine system plays a role in regulating mood, growth and development, tissue function, metabolism, and sexual function and reproductive processes.
-
Works together with the nervous system . The nervous system is short term changes and the endocrine system is long term.
Hypothalamus: collection of specialized cells that is the main link between the nervous system and endocrine system
-
Nerve cells in the hypothalamus control the pituitary gland by producing chemicals that either stimulate or suppress hormone secretion from the pituitary.
-
Thyroid
-
Produces thyroxine and triiodothyronine. Both control the rate at which cells burn fuels from food to produce energy
The more thyroid hormone there is in a person's bloodstream, the faster chemical reactions occur in the body.
-
Pituitary Gland:
Location: Base of the brain, just below the hypothalamus (no larger than a pea)
Considered the most important part of the endocrine system. Information is given to the pituitary gland from the brain to help determine what hormone(s) to release.
Two Parts:
Anterior Lobe: regulates the activity of the thyroid, adrenals, and reproductive glands
