Real life cases
Twins in Czech Republic reared from 1 1/2 - 7 years by psychopathic step mother and inadequate father. Mother died and they had 11 months in a children home. Farther remarried and the children went home. They were in isolation and didn't attend school. When discovered at seven they could hardly walk; poor one motor skills; no spontaneous speech. Between 7 and 10 there was a rapid development and entered mainstream school at ten. Yet severe deprivation in developing bonds
Genie - severely neglected from under the age of two until the age of thirteen.Daytime was chained to a potty, at night tied into a sleeping bag. No one spoke to her so when she was found she made unintelligible sounds. She wasn't toilet-trained and couldn't walk properly but instead shuffled her feet. Learned to walk and use toilets but not to speak.
What is the difference between the two cases? They were both nurtured during the first few months. The twins weren't totally isolated and discovered relatively young. Rehabilitation was possible under these more favourable circumstances, maybe Genie 's deprivation was to severe.

Harry Harlow's Rhesus monkeys - isolated eight newborn monkeys from mother. They were put into a cage with two surrogate mothers one which was cloth and one which was wire. 4 of them were fed by the wire monkey and 4 were fed by the cloth mother. They found that all the monkeys clung to the clothes mother for support even if they were not fed by them.
