MEMORY
PROCESS
Encode: dorsomedial thalamus, frontal lobes, language system and visual system e.g. association areas
Store: hippocampus, bilateral medial temporal lobes
Attend: brainstem, thalamic structures and frontal lobes
-
DECLARATIVE
STAGES
Short-term memory
For input from sensory registers to proceed to storage in long term memory it must be subject to deliberate working for approximately 30 seconds
-
-
-
-
Long term memory
Relatively permanent storage of information that has been processed in short-term memory.
Short term -> long term = consolidation
-
-
PROCEDURAL
-
Prospective memory: Relies on frontal lobe and places high demand on working memory. Remembering that something has to be done at some point in the future, without any prompting in the form of explicit recall instructions.
ANATOMY
Hippocampus
Declarative memory
Temporary storage – leading to consolidation
Temporal and spatial navigation
Assists with associative learning
Cerebellum
Involved with skills, conditioning and procedural memory
-
WORKING MEMORY
Goal-relevant information for a short time.
Location: Prefrontal and parietotemporal association cortex
-
Interference (interaction with new material)
Proactive (forward activing) interference: past memories impact the learning of new memories.
Retroactive (backwards – acting) interference: new information affects the retrieval of older information.
