I learned my command terms, how to write a compare and contrast essay and how to write a literary text.
It was not that challenging but we had to write many words on our book and that was quite annoying.
I liked the lesson where we we played Kahoot.it about language and literature.
Writing and handwriting. Writing is really hard sometimes because I prefer to write things straight forward and to the point and it is very hard for me to stretch a sentence out a lot more currently right now
NIDHI
What did you learn?
Throughout this quarter I learned lots of new things like the things I haven’t learn when I was in PYP. I learned how to read a historical fiction and try to make it a history like connecting the real history of it which is amazing which it means that I’m going further with the story and the history.
Throughout the quarter, we learned about the influence of historical context in literature and how it shapes a genre. For example, in this quarter we learned about the House of Sixty Fathers and how it was set during the Second-Sino Japanese war. Since it was set in the historical context of war, the novel revolved around the refugee crisis and scarcity of resources thrusted upon war. Without the integration of the historical context, the plot would've seem ambiguous and confusing, lacking narrative texture.
I found the part of formulating questions deriving do from reading excerpts of the book to be the most challenging, because I'm not a very good inquirer and I am not used to the methodology of inferring through asking questions.
Learning about the author's life, was the most interesting part of the whole quarter. I was able to understand how the experiences faced by the Dejong, helped to provide context and verisimilitude to the novel. A vast majority of the plot and Tien Pao’s character, was brought to life based on the scenarios Dejong underwent. As a person who garners great interest in writing, I thought it was rather telling how an author can infuse fragments of their identity in their work and reveal themselves, imparting transparency to their audience.
I believe that my weakness is the sophistication (structure) of my works, which is what lessened my Criteria B marks. Moreover, integrating the evidence within the analysis without the use of brackets or colons, is one of my difficulties. I think that summarising my points and only embedding the points with great criticality, will help keep my essays and narratives straightforward. Also, using transition words, such as, ‘As said in the text,’ will better my flow of the analysation and ensure that the evidence is put into proper format.
I was really interested to read The House Of Sixty Fathers it was really interesting to read a story about a boy surviving without the parents during war and we all may want to know in a real information how people felt and it’s also creative to create a connection of a story and a history of it.

I found writing a compare and a contrast is really challenging because I have to compare the Vietnam war and the Iraq war and it’s really hard to think about other ideas because I had like a same idea as a Vietnam war and I thought it will be a good idea to have a same idea as Iraq war and then I realize is not good at all to have the same idea it’s not going to be a compare and a contrast so that was challenging for me to think of ideas to write down in my essay.
1.Throughout the quarter I've learned about Tien pao(TH60F),making a speech on war, etc. We also used historical context in the quarter and used transitional words.Last week we had a exam and we had to write a compare & contrast essay and a first person point of view diary entry on Anne frank. And for writing a compare and contrast essay we had two different types block method & point by point method.
2.I think the part where we made a speech and presented it was the most interesting in the quarter.Becuase it had to be about us as Tien Pao on our experiences on war(Japanese war) and the war we had heard of(our choice). It had to include transitional words, etc and when presenting we could also do gestures and move around the class which is cool.
3.I think the most challenging part was actually making the speech it's self. There were many choices of how to start the speech like quotes, questions, etc. And we had to connect the Japanese war and (for me) the Vietnamese war.
4.I think when doing any task I could have used more complicated words than regular straight forward words.Especially during the compare and contrast essay I could have added more command terms.
5.(I did not go) from what I heard they saw the old war zones from the world war and studied the history of the Vietnam war.
6.Yes because yes...
7.Ive learned about the history of world war 2 and read the house of sixty fathers which was based on world war 2.I now know how war would be like in a third person pof and a first person pof.
Letter to Ms.Joelle
Dear Ms.Joelle

I do agree with the statement of the inquiry. The historical context, with is the foundation for the social context, does help to classify a literary genre. I believe this because, the dates and times in which situations unravel, contribute to the social ideology of the time. Thus, in literature the choice of historical context, does impact what kinds of genre it is. For example, in Frankenstein, the book was set during the time of the industrial revolution, contributing to the scientific theme of the book, which led it to be deemed as a novel of Science Fiction.
I found the Analyzing the books easier and interesting. I love the lesson as we get to explore the meaning of the book deeper, like what does this statement symbolize so we would understand the book better also the writer or author itself.
I found the parts of newspaper confusing as there are a lot of parts making it confusing. As also some of the parts are really confusing to label. I can improve by reading newspapers often so I know it better.
Throughout the whole quarter, I learned the book The House of Sixty Fathers. I learned the historical context in the book and how does this book related to the statement of inquiry. However, we revise on figurative language, punctuation and putting commas. Mostly, we learn on the relation of historical fiction to The House of Sixty Fathers. Overall, historical fiction, fiction and non-fiction, historical context of THOF, facts about Meindert Dejong, figurative language, and reading the book.
The lesson I found interesting was learning about the historical context about THOF, because it allows me to understand the reason of the writer writing this book and the story behind it. This can help teach me more about the history about WW2. There’s one more lesson that I find it interesting, is facts about Meindert Dejong, because in the future I would know who is Miendert Dejong.
The part that I find challenging was the historical fiction, because I never knew what is historical fiction and it was hard to get along with others. However, I will try to understand more about the historical fiction in the future. There’s one more, which is writing a compare and contrast essay, because is hard to understand and I don’t like writing so much in the essay.
My weakness was trying to write a compare and contrast essay, because is difficult to understand. Plus, I don’t really like the habit of writing so much in an essay. In order, to improve I will try to have a patience to write another compare and contrast essay.
My whole expedition was about WW2 and based on the book. The book is related to the WW2 and it has the same situation. Overall, the expedition and the book is related to WW2.
Yes, because throughout this whole quarter it was all about historical context. Our statement of inquiry is literacy genres are define by a historical context. That means our book, the house of sixty fathers can be define by a historical context.
The most memorable things I have learn was learning about Meindert Dejong, because it was interesting than other lesson that we have in class. As you know, I love interesting facts and that lesson was all about interesting facts. The other one was learning about the figurative language, because it was easy.
Thank you, for all the kindness to help me in class. You had help me on my grammar mistakes in my speech and making my speech even more interesting. Whatever, I in trouble during class you will always help me to understand it. For all of that, I will try to improve myself in the future.Dear Nidhi,
Sincerely, Song Qi
Thank you, for all the lesson that you had prepare for us. You know our feelings during class, and you will always prepare the lesson even more fun. We all appreciate that. You will always be patient with us. You always make us laugh when we are doing work. Thank you for all the patience and kindness to us.Dear Ms. Joelle,
Sincerely, Song Qi

Dear Ms.joelle,I believe that my weakness is the sophistication (structure) of my works, which is what lessened my Criteria B marks. I went to Vietnam to explore more and since I was reading The House Of Sixty Fathers and the story was about the Vietnam War I wanted to know more about the history and go further with the topic and there was a connection since there is this character name Tien Pao, he was a religious boy and there were a lot of temple in Vietnam and he said Vietnam was full of explosion during war and if we see Vietnam now it change a lot of the war.
I do because is all about connection and we are connecting the story with the history and we are also wanting to know why did the author make the story that had terrifying things.

1.In this quarter I mostly had learned about relating historical context and settings to the writer’s intention,I also learned the the effect to the reader when such writer’s intention and places give.
2.I found the lesson interesting when we were reading the house of 60 fathers book, while reading the book I was able to know writer’s hidden meaning in the book. The thing knowing such things were fun.
3.I found it very challenging when we were doing the speech,we were supposed to be the tien pao and it was a bit hard to relate tien pao’s experience to the korean war which I had chosen.
4.I think my weakness is that I am very weak at putting emotions and making some sentences,I think I should ask some people to read my essay or speech so I can know weather it make sense or not.
5.The expedition location was vietnam which is the setting of the tien pao book,in the expedition we were able to learn how bad was the result of war and from that we were able to understand book more easily.
6.I agree to the statement of inquiry because the words written shows the Audience how bad was the war.Example such as tien pao express how bad was the war using languages.
7.For me most memorable things that I learned in class is that the author himself had also experienced the war which is happening in the book, the experiences he felt was too shocking for kids.
8.to umar
You are the one of the funniest guy in the class, every class you give us the fun jokes and everybody can laugh, eventhrough there are cases that you are saying too much we all know that you are doing it for us.Thank you so much Umar, happy Ramadin end.

In this quarter,I learned about Historical Fiction.I know the Writing technique. Also,I learn the war history of Vietnam war.For the expedition,we went to Vietnam, for learning the war history of Vietnam. And this quarter we are learning a fiction about Chinese war,the Vietnam war is just the next big war after China and Japanese war.
The Vietnam war is between American and Vietnamese people, and this is the first war that America lost.It is a very cruelty war I have ever known. The American use a lot of best weapon and chemical to find to the small and weak country.
I've learned about the importance of planning and drafting using an appropriate model. For example, I have been able to enhance my narrative writing and add clarity to it, by studying the Freytag’s Pyramid. Understanding the elements of the each part in a narrative, such as, a climax, exposition and resolution, helped me the improve my short stories, ensuring that I used these elements.

Song Qi: Dear Song Qi, thank you for your input and guidance for all of my writing pieces. Without our criticism, I wouldn't have been able to improve my work and boost up my marks in each criteria. I really do hope, we can continue to communicate about our literary works for the betterment of both of our products.
Dear Ms.Joelle, I would like to appreciate you for all the tireless effort and aid you've provided us, consistently throughout this year. Through your constant constructive criticism and pushing, we have become better analysts and authors. How is your expedition to Vietnam related to the book, The House of The Sixty Fathers?
When I visited Vietnam I went to the Cu Chi tunnel it has much trap and it is used by the Vietnamese to kill the Americans, this is related to the HO60F because it shows the same war environment.
Do you agree with the statement of inquiry? Why?
yes, because it is related to what we learned in the quarter.
- What are the most memorable things that you have learned in the class?
Reflection question
- Throughout the quarter, I learned the story of the house of sixty father and I learned how to write compare and contrast the essay.
- The interesting lesson was that when we read the story of the house of sixty father. Because the story was interesting to me.
- The most challenging lesson was that when I had to understand the story of the house of sixty father.
Our trip to Vietnam was related to the House of Sixty Fathers as both of it experienced a grunch wrenching and cold war. As there were people dead, injured, missing, tortured, etc. Also country being damaged but both of the country win.
My weakness is write an essay, first I always forgot to using the writing technique in the essay, and my language is not well,so I have a lot of grammar problem.I need to read more English fiction to improve my language and grammar.
throughout the quarter I learnt about Tien Pao and The house of sixty fathers. I learnt the historical context in TH60F, figurative languages, child portrayal during World War II and also about the author (Meindert DeJong).
The lesson I found the most interesting was learning about the historical context and also learning about Tien Pao and TH60F because I could understand the historical context of TH60F.
The lesson I found the most challenging was the historical context although it was interesting I found it quite difficult to understand the war, communism, civil war, World War II etc.
My weaknesses is the intention of the writer and effects on the reader because I did not really write about the effects on the reader etc.
Vietnam is related to the book, TH60F because in Vietnam we learnt about the historical event that happened in Vietnam, war, communism. I'm the book it was about Tien Pao hiding from the Japanese and the Japanese invading the village.
I agree with the statement of inquiry
because literary genres can be defined by a historical contexts because any genres can be historical.
The most memorable lesson was playing the Kahoot because we had fun and alps at the same time prepared for the exam coming up.

You made grade 7 the best because of your happiness and laugh. words cannot describe how much you have helped me understand for exams and also in class. Once Again Thank you Ms. Joelle!
I think the individual mind map is interesting, when we finish it,everyone paste it on top the classroom.Everyone has their own mind map and I think the challenging class is the history of each country in our classmate. It is difficult to summary the history and also explain clearly.
The most memorable I’ve learnt is the time we did the speech as we can express what we feel about war. Also how we can review or present how the book itself impacts me. As I can also feel the emotions and feelings of me and being TP at the same time

Jiayang is always help me,He help me on the language part.
I want to write a letter for him.
Dear Jiayang:
Hi,thank you for helping me language in this quarter, really thanks for your help.I will improve myself as fast as I can.
Our expedition to Vietnam is related to THOSF, is in how the country faced war but was able to endure it. I believe that it reflected the spirit of the Vietnamese people who were eager to rebuild their country from bloodshed, which shares commonalities with Tien Pao’s character. This is because, Tien Pao was also a resilient character and a pure heart, in search of change and betterment.
HUBERT
Throughout the quarter I learned how to write and compare and contrast essay using block method. And knowing how to do a WW2 speech and how to use transitional words. The interesting part of the lesson was the time where we did a WW2 timeline and knew about how China reacted to the Japanese when they were attacking China. The part of the lesson where I found challenging was the part when we had to do a speech about the war that we choosed and knowing about its interesting facts and how to make it sound interesting and not boring. My weaknesses is that I know how to do it but I don't know how to start and know what to write. I can improve by just write it down and when I did a mistake I can improve from that mistake. The expedition to Vietnam and the relationship between The house of sixty fathers is that the historical background was based on WW2. Telling that how they lived in WW2 and how they defended themselves from the enemy. I agree with the statement of inquiry because it was related what we have learned in this quarter. The most memorable thing that I have remembered was that we had fun when learning and we had to copy down a lot of things when it close to the assessment time.
The statement inquiry is related to the war,and help us to understand the war and know the fiction we are learning more clearly.

JIAYANG
I learned about the Second World War happened in 1900s, which made by Nazism. Especially the war that happened in China, which called the Second Sino Japanese War. A book described the miserable scenes and lives people, called ‘the house of sixty fathers’. For me, the most interesting lesson is the history of China. Because there were many countries, parties, and events involved in the war, which made the history complicated, and I like this kind of things very much. The challenging lesson for me, is the figurative language, because there were too many different types of them. Hence, I had to remember them all, and also how to use and analyze them. I think my weakness is the use of languages when I am writing essays. I can improve this by accumulating vocabulary, and practice in daily lives. I can also practice the using of figurative languages in my essays. I visited the war museum in Vietnam expedition, which related to the theme that I’ learning this quarter. The Vietnamese during the war were very poor and knowledge less, like the Chinese during the war. Hence, I could see the war is really big sin, and furthermore, I could realize the peace should be cherished. The most memorable class for me, is the class of presentation for our speech on War. I presented my speech with feeling of nervousness, but I think I presented well. My classmates presented, too, and we wrote our opinions on their presentations.
Dear David,
I have been being your friend since the first quarter. We helped each other mutually on every subjects we have learned. For language and literature class, we learned about so many things to improve our writing and reading abilities. We studied and improved together with happiness.
