General Considerations
Assures students acquire a breadth of knowledge
provides a basis for developing essential learning outcomes.

General Education Definition: Subset of Liberal Education that is shared by all students at a particular University
"part of a University undergraduate curriculum that is shared by all students."
PASSHE interpretation of General Education Compliance with Middle States Commission on Higher Education and University responsibilities
Each will provide a general education program either free standing or integrated that does the following:

offers sufficient scope to draw students into new areas of intellectual experience
expands global and cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity
Prepares them to make well reasoned judgments outside as well as within their academic field
Offers a curriculum designed so that students acquire and demonstrate the essential skills including at LEAST:
Oral and written communication
Scientific and quantitative reasoning
Critical analysis and reasoning
Technological competency
Information literacy
Include the study of:
Values
Ethics
Diverse perspectives
Assessment
Clearly stated educational goals
Systematic assesment
Articulate how students are prepared for successful careers, meaningful lives and where appropriate further education
Design General Education programs and requirements to meet student learning outcomes

Transfer
Fully accept any completed General Education program from another PASSHE University
AA or AS identified in P2P will be given full Junior Status
Prior learning may be used to meet General Education learning outcomes. Such learning will be transcripted.

Directed General Education (Prescribed General Education) courses "General education courses that are "required for the major" are considered "directed general education” or “prescribed general education". Therefore, directed (prescribed) general education courses are counted in the general education requirement/credits. As such, they would not be counted in courses/credits for the major requirements.
Directed General Education courses are distinct from Cognate Courses.
