B5 Test Revision
The Nervous System
-
-
Reflexes
Reflexes are quick automatic responses which bypass the brain hence why they are so quick. they protect the body from any danger
-
-
Synapse
A synapse is a small gap between the ends of neurones which electrical impulses must cross over to be carried further
-
Acts for a short time, very rapidly in a general way
-
-
The Endocrine System
-
The Negative Feedback control is a feedback control where the body sense a change and tries to rectify it so the body returns to normal again
-
-
-
-
Types of Glands
-
-
Pituitary Gland
Produces many hormones
Controls the thyroid, ovaries and testes
Also known as the master gland as it produces hormones which act upon other organs/glands (stimulating production of other hormones)
Acts in response to body conditions and releases hormones to stimulate other glands to produce particular effects
-
-
-
-
Water Balance
Where is water lost?
-
Kidney
Produces urine loses water - excess water, ions and urea removed via kidneys - controlled
-
-
-
-
-
Glucose Regulation
Hormones involved
Glucose
Sugar used to make energy in respiration, found in blood plasma
Glycogen
Substance made of glucose, stored in liver
Insulin
Hormone, tells body to change glucose to glycogen
-
-
Diabetes
Type1
Little or no insulin in the pancreas, blood glucose levels rise as it cannot enter the cells
-
Type2
Slow rise of blood sugar levels as not enough glucose gets in the cells, this gets higher and higher until pancreas wears out
-
-
Plant Hormones
-
Hormones involved
Gibberelins
Stimulates shoot elongation, seed germination, fruit and slower maturation - assures seeds to germinate at the right time of year, promotes flowering in correct day length. (Regulates growth)
-
Auxins
Increase shoot growth, inhibits root growth
-
-
The Menstrual Cycle
Hormones involved
-
Oestrogen - stimulates pituitary gland to make LH (luteinising hormone), this triggers the release of an egg (ovulation) from ovary
Prevents more FSH being secreted, repairs uterus lining after menstruation
Progesterone - this maintains the uterus lining and works with oestrogen to prevent secretion of FSH
-
