Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
Born: India, 1869
Studied Law at University College, London
South Africa
Came to South Africa in 1893
Stayed for 20 years
South Africa still ruled by Britain
Black people & Indians not allowed to vote or live in the same area as white people
Kicked off a train for riding in 'whites-only' section
Organised the Indian community to protest unjust racial laws
Said if people came together and refused to obey the laws, the government would be forced to change them
eg. in 1907, a law required Indian people to be fingerprinted and to carry a registration document at all times. Gandhi refused. He was imprisoned for this
India
Went back to India in 1915
British still in power, were very unjust
Journeyed all across India
Organised protests, taught people they were special and should be treated with respect
Salt March
1930: British passed a law charging tax on producing and selling salt in India
Gandhi wished to protest, but was not near a salt mine
In order to break the law, he marched 300km to the sea
Broke the law by producing salt by distilling ocean water
He was imprisoned but protests continued. The British were forced to change the law
His Ideas
Peaceful action was more powerful than violence
Did not want to fight the British with violence and hate, but to protest in peace
Believed this would make the oppressors realise that Indian people were good and wanted to be treated well
Oppressors: People who treat others badly
Believed all people could change for good and people should try to change the oppressor's view
Warned that those who used violence could easily become the oppressors themselves
Coined the phrase Satyagraha for his non violent protests
Easy in some ways, you don't need to fight or do anything active, simply refuse to do as you're told
Far harder than fighting, if someone threatens to shoot you, you sit and let them decide if whether to shoot you or not
British authorities did not know how to respond.
If you ignore them you look weak
If you shoot, you look like a bully
People followed him because he made them take pride in themselves and Indian culture
Death
India is a country with many religions and beliefs, not everyone shared Gandhi's beliefs
Conflict between Hindus and Muslims for a long time
Gandhi believed they should all live together in peace
30 January 1948: Gandhi was killed on his way to a prayer for peace
A man called Nathuram Godse approached him and bowed
A girl accompanying Gandhi said he was already late
Godse pushed her aside and shot Gandhi 3 times in the chest
Gandhi was 78 years old.
People all over the world were shocked and sad
