About
-
Modal jazz (laid back, uncomplicated)
-
-
-
-
Davis gave directions on structure, chord sequence and scale for players to work around
Melody
-
Trumpet solo mostly made uo of short, syncopated motifs
Alto sax solo uses quicker notes, wide range, virtuosic
Tenor sax solo uses fast scales, quick runs, very virtuosic
Piano solo's improv is calm, simple melody and use of parallel chords
-
-
Instrumental techniques
Drums play with wire brushes at the start, switches to sticks later on
-
Trumpet plays with a Harmon mute for head section, taken off for solo so it can be heard easily
Piano plays tremolo at beginning. Starts comping when solos begin (accompanying with chords and short melodic ideas)
Rhythm
6/4, uses swing quavers to create jazz waltz feel
Jazz waltz also created because each 6/4 bar sounds like a pair of bars in 3/4, typical time sig. for a waltz
-
-
Timbre
Band is a sextet made up of front line (plays melody and has solos) and rhythm section (provides harmonic and rhythmic backing)
Frontline: Trumpet (Miles Davis), Alto sax (Julian Adderly) and Tenor sax (John Coltrane)
Rhythm: Piano (Bill Evans), Bass (Paul Chambers) and Drums (Jimmy Cobb)
Dynamics
Solo sections more focused on, accompaniment dies away
-
-
Texture
Homophonic, one melody with accompaniment
