Parts One, Two, and Three
The Doctor and Ace go to Coal Hill School - Michael Sheard!
Lots of exposition: "The Zygon gambit" etc.
"When I was here before, I left something behind..."
"You mean the Hand of Omega?"
Meanwhile, Ratcliffe is in league with the Daleks! (We're led to believe it's Davros, back to camera, and that voice.)
Blowing up the transmat - it looks great! The materialising Dalek, with the x-ray vision showing the mutant creature and its workings inside.
Cliffhanger: Dalek ascending the stairs!
Ace and the Doctor blow up the Imperial Dalek with an Anti Tank Rocket, very handily appears at the school on the Group Captain's orders.
The Doctor goes to "bury his past". "I'll be back in the morning".
Rachel: "Ace, what does he mean, not being being born yet?" Ace smiles enigmatically - I love that the companion gets this cool things as well as just the Doctor.
The Cafe Scene! "What if I could control people's taste buds?" A meditation on the course of history, the impact of decisions and actions, small and great - the ripples in the lake metaphor is beautiful!
John: "Life's like that, best thing is just to get on with it".
The funeral home scene (Old Valhalla Road Crematorium!) and cemetery - great set piece! Throw back to Hartnell ("I thought you said he was an old geezer with white hair?"), with a cool shot of the Doctor throwing dirt on the casket from below.
Meanwhile, the Headmaster is killed mercilessly by the Imperial Daleks controlling him, his cover compromised and his purpose spent - so sad "In Loving Memory"
Ace goes off to fight the Daleks with her turbocharged baseball bat, courtesy of the Hand of Omega. She's kick ass! Jumping through windows, branding an ATR.
Cliffhanger: Daleks surrounding Ace. Is this the end?
The cavalry (i.e. ICMG) save the day, with Mike leading the charge.
The Doctor is attacked by the mutant's claw! So cool - so Genesis of the Daleks!
Daleks and the Emperor screaming on the bridge. They then exterminate everyone in the Association - brutal! But like allies of the Cybermen, they meet the same fate. The wages of sin is death!
The wrong Daleks capture the Hand of Omega. Lots of toing and froing, and the last of the Basil Exposition moments with the Doctor pulling Ace to one side on the stairwell at Coal Hill.
It may seem corny now, but Sylvester and Sophie hiding in the canvas phone repairman's hut from a passing Dalek is one of my clearest memories of first watching this on the last day of school with my brother and two friends in the mid '90s
The landing of the Dalek scout ship in Coal Hill High School playground. Think about it. The First Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara have probably just taken off in the TARDIS in An Unearthly Child, after which they will meet the Daleks for the first time on Skaro in the next story after it, and here are the Daleks landing in the place in which it all began (25 years later)...
Cliffhanger: The windows explode, and the Doctor has made a grave error or judgement. Now, this is where things really take off because we've just really had some Part Three Padding going on, and look it's been really charming, but now we're probably where we would be at the 20 minute mark of a modern 42 minute Doctor Who episode and the two Dalek factions are no longer kept separate and apart, and we can finally watch the really exciting whizz-bang stuff of different coloured Daleks shooting at one another with ray guns on the streets of Shoreditch, East London.
