Group Dynamics and Cohesion
Characteristics of a team
Communication: to help with interaction individuals should talk and communicate non verbally
Shared goal or purpose: prospect of achieving success is what keeps people in the team working for each other
Interaction: team members should operate in their own role successfully and be able to link this role with other team members seen as a way team players work together to complete a task
Collective identity: team recognised by wearing the same kit strong affiliation with the team and gain a sense of pride
Tuckman's four stages of group formation
Storming: stage of potential conflict where players try to establish their position in a team must be resolved quickly
Norming: once conflicts have been resolved the teams begin to settle down and cooperate
Forming: group coming together and getting to know each other
Performing: all players are now interactive and working together to achieve their goals

Looks at the end result and involves every player working together to achieve the goal by doing their role well or working hard with the team

Actual Productivity= Potential productivity-losses due to faulty proceses
Actual productivity= final outcome of team performance e.g. Win Loss Draw
Steiner model of productivity
Potential productivity= Teams best possible outcome that could happen if everything went to plan
Faulty processes:
Two types: Co-ordination and motivational
Co-ordination problems involve not following the instructions of the coach and using the wrong tactics e.g. failure in communication or not understanding role given by coach
Prevent full potential of team being met
Motivational problems occur due to incorrect levels of arousal
Simply things that can go wrong
Social loafing is the loss of motivation in an individual due to not being recognised
Social Cohesion
Cohesion is the tendency of members of a team to work together to achieve what they want to achieve
Coaction is a team performing the same task but at different times e.g. relay
Interaction is when a group works together to produce results
looks at interaction of individuals and how they work with each other can help improve interaction and communication
