charles escaped and he made a agreement with the scots and they agreed to fight for him
the war had begun again
second civil war 1648
this war was bloody and short and charles never had no chance to win
in august cormwell took an army north it defeated the scots
the second civil war was important because it convinced many people that charles could not be trusted
between 1646 and 1648 there where arguments on how england should be run
the king was imprisoned and refused to negate with any 1 parliament was divided some wanted to do way with a national church and others wanted to get rid of just bishops
some people had very radical ideas the levellers wanted ordinary people to have a say
there were also arguments about the new modal army some people wanted to send soldiers home but the soldiers weren't paid yet
they wanted a promise that they would not be arrested for what they had done during the war
a divide had opened up between the parliament and the army lead by cromwell he was worried that parliament would do a deal with the king
the trial of the king 1649
chalres was imprisoned again
Colonel Pride took a group of soldiers in to Parliament. They there out all the MPs who wanted to negotiate with the King.
Charles was executed 30th January 1649. England was now Republic.
The MPs that were left formed the Rump Parliament of 60 MPs. They voted to put the King own trial.
The Rump Parliament declared would laws for itself without the lords or the King.
At the King's trial, he was accused of having broken the sacred bond between king and people. He was found guilty and sentenced to death.
