Key events of the revolt
By 1570 the revolt was a full scale bloody civil war with 30,000 Morisco rebels inflicting brutal atrocities on Catholics. e.g. monks were thrown into cauldrons of boiling oil
In February 1569 Cordoba led a force into Inox of 800 and killed 400 men whilst reducing 2700 women and children to slavery
In February 1570 Don John ordered the entire population of Galera (some 2,500 people) to be killed
March 1570 - government had effectively regained control and Philip ordered the dispersal of all Moriscos, regardless of whether they had rebelled or not
-
Outcome
Exposed Castile's military weakness: Don John had only had 20,000 low quality troops at his disposal, Castile had no effective militia (regular army), and the coasts had been ill-defended. Inadequate resources had been accompanied by blatant corruption within the ranks.
The revolt should have been easy for Philip to crush but it had lasted two years, took 60,000 spanish lives, and cost 3 million ducats
October 1570: All Moriscos were expelled from Granada. 90,000 were redistributed in Castile (but 30% died in transit)
The dispersal of the Moriscos simply worsened the problem since now they were spread throughout Castile instead of confined to Granada - more difficult to control. They failed to assimilate into society - not least because they were barred from most professions. Tensions between Old Christians and Moriscos
-
Worst impacts felt in Granada:fifty thousand Old Christians moved in to fill the vacancies but 1/3 of settlements remained unoccupied and the population fell by over a quarter.
