Communication Science: Learning Unit 5
LO1.1: Significance of conflict
management for intercultural
conflict
LO1.2: Types of conflict
Interpersonal Conflict
When conflict occurs on a personal level, such as when one person experiences conflict due to anothers cultural differences.
Political Conflict
When conflict occurs on a societal level such as in a disagreement between environmentalists and developers on economic interests.
International Confict
When conflict occurs on an international level such as the conflict between Israel and Palestine or the disagreements over the handling of Somalia.
Conflict from mediated communication
US media has dominated the world thus imposing US cultural values on others, leading to conflict as it makes other cultures seem inferior.
LO2.1: Role of certain paradigms in
producing social change
Dependancy
This says that when a developed country establishes a process of modernization in a developing country, the developing country becomes dependent on aid, advice and development from outside their own country.
The world consists of core states and satellites.
Developed countries exploit developing ones.
Media is also core to this paradigm
Participatory
If communication takes the form of dialogue, communicators participate on equal footing.
began as a solution to one way communication paradigms. It stresses cultural identity and the participation of all levels ( international, local, and individual.)
Human/person centered rather than only focused on economic growth.
Modernisation
This is the view of development as being a linear and evolutionary process which a country should go through to reach economic and democratic development.
Implies the adoption of new behavior and technologies. This adoption process is riddled with obstacles such as fear of the unknown and skepticism.
Need for developing countries to become media users , this is due to modernization use of the hypodermic needle theory. This theory poses the idea that receivers offer no resistance and communication flows in one direction.
LO2.2: Three principles
relevant to the participatory
paradigm
Participation
It aims at power equalization by locals rather than external experts so that locals have control over developmental messages.
Participation is a two way interaction between receivers and the source.
Ensures involvement and the addressing of the true issues. It promotes self sufficiency.
Dialogue
Dialogue is essential for social change in the paradigm. People possess the ability to change themselves through dialogue.
Empowerment
People are empowered by their surroundings
People have to take ownership of their own problems and find solutions to them to feel empowered.
