How William Controlled England
William had taken the throne by force after killing Harold who was the real King
So he had to control England very firmly
He set up a
Feudal System
- which was an order of importance that kept people in their correct place in society.
Kings at the Top
Then the Nobles
Only few people were nobles
Then the knights
Finally the peasants
Most people were peasants
In the Feudal System, the king gave land to the nobles
The nobles gave the kings knights to fight for him
The nobles gave land to the knights
The knights rented land to the peasants who looked after it for the knights
The King gave land to the nobles
William built slots of castles to show how string he was and to defend the country from attack
The king made a deal with the nobles that as long as they supported him he would give them land and importance
William crushed anyone who tried to rebel against him such as the
Harrying of the North
He burnt every village between
York and Durham
because they stood up to him
William ordered a book to be written called the Domesday Book.
This was a book of everyone in England and everything they owned
This was so that he would know how rich everyone was and who he was controlling
