Age of Discovery
During the Early Modern Age, many explorers made voyages to distant places. They discovered and conquered new lands and peoples. For this reason, this period is called the Age of Discovery.
In 1492,Christopher went on a voyage.He wanted to find a western route to Asia.

The Hapsburgs
In the 16th and 17th centiries, Spain was ruled by the Hapsburgs dynasty. The grandson of the catholic monarcs, Carlos l, was the first Hapsburgs king of Spain.
Under the Hapsburgs, Spain became an enormous international empire. The empire included lands in Europe, Asia, Africa and America. Carlos l and Felipe ll were the most important Hapsburgs king.

Golden Age
During the period of the Hapsburg dynasty great Shpanish artists and writers became famous. Because of this, the 16th and 17th centuries are called the Golden Age.
In the 16th century , the most important painter i n Spain was El Greco.
In the 17th Century, the were other great painters, such as Murillo and Velázquez.

The Bourbons
After Carlos ll died in 1700, there was a war between Spain and other European countries.They disagreed about who shold be the next king, so the war was called the War of the Spanish Succesions. These kings were called the Bourbons.
The first Bourbon king was Felipe V. He centralised the government. In the second half on the 18th century, Carlos lll was king. Carlos lll introduced many projects to modernise the country.

The catholic monarchs
At the beginning of the Early Modern Age, there were various kingdoms on iberian peninsula, such as Aragón, Castilla and Navarra. In 1469 Fernando of Aragón and Isabel of Castilla married.
When Enrique died in 1474, Isabel declared that she was queen.

The Early Modern Age began with the discovery of America in 1492, and ended with the French Revolution in 1789.
