Storm Hazards :wind_blowing_face:
Causes of tropical storms
27 degree sea temperature
warm moist air above it rises rapidly
lateral winds cause air to spin as it rises
condensation leads to huge cumulonimbus clouds forming
cold air is drawn in a high pressure systems cause any moist air to evaporate
warm air is drawn in from the sides feeding the hurricane and giving it energy
generic causes
5 degrees north or south of the equator
between the tropic of cancer and capricorn
CASE STUDY
Hurricane Matthew
causes - 195km/h winds
effects - 1000 deaths in Haiti, panic buying due to food shortages - economic social secondary, power cuts in Cuba - economic secondary, 50,000 people in Haiti required medical care, communication links down
responses - US digital tracking system, evacuations of residents, emergency survival kits in US, disney world was closed, orlando airport closed, CARE charity provided food for Haiti, Cholera outbreak predicted by WHO, slow rebuilding in Haiti
Prediction, preparation and planning
use satellites to track the routes of the hurricanes
in the US the National Hurricane Centre track and inform hurricanes
Protections from Storm Hazards
Sea Wall - defelct the seas energy back into the sea
Reinforced window shutters - stops windows shattering under wind force
houses on stilts - discourage floodwater from damaging homes eg Bangladesh
cyclone shelters - used as schools out of season, basic announcements encourage people to go to the shelters
levees - prevent increased discharge from bursting the river banks
different storm hazards
high winds
storm surge - low pressure, sea level rises
pluvial coastal flooding
fluvial river flooding
landslides
CASE STUDY
Cyclone Nargis
causes - low pressure in bay of bengal, 165mph winds, air pressure droppped to 962mb, low lying delta
effects - 150,000 people were killed, $10million damage 70% of townships were dead
responses - politcally - declined aid, asked UN for aid and only accepted India's, no media access allowed, general than shwe pictured handing out aid
their names around the world
Hurricane - Atlantic
Typhoon - SE asia, W pacific ocean, Japan
Cyclone - Indian ocean, S asia
