COGNITIVE AGING THEORIES
Sensory deficit theory
-
Three views:
- Cascade view: sensory organ degeneration leads to sensory deficits
- Common cause view: sensory and cognitive def are both mediated by widespread (diffuso) degeneration
- Decline-compensation view: deterioration of sensory processing compensated by over-recruitment of PFC
-
Resources deficit theory
Reduction in the amount of attentional resources:
- poor performance i attentional high-demanding tasks
- smaller differences when the environment reduces the attentional demand
Reduction in efficiency of frontal lobe functioning.
This theory predicts HAROLD: weaker activity in PFC
Speed deficit theory
General reduction in the speed of cognitive processes:
- Limited time mechanism: time requires fo early operations reduces the time for later operations
- Simultaneity mechanism: products of early operations are lost for later operations
