Values and ideology
Religious beliefs are one type of belief system, other types include scientific and political beliefs, followers of each type of belief system may see them as unbiased whilst others with see them value laden and therefore subjective
Some sociologists see a variety of belief systems as being ideological and these see ideology as being defined as a set of beliefs which support the interests of a particular group
Marxism and ideology
Marxists argue that capitalist societies like Britain and America are dominated by ruling class ideology, a set of beliefs that support the interests of the bourgeoisie
The dominant ideology is reproduced through mass media and encourages: acceptance of capitalism as the best economic system, consumer culture and a passive workforce which accepts its wages as being normal due to educational achievement and a passive workforce
Feminism and ideology:
Feminists believe society is dominated by patriarchal ideology, the belief that men are and should be dominant in society
Radical feminists see patriarchal ideology as being deeply entrenched in society. It is reflected in ideas about sexuality and women are expected to meet a mans needs
Marxist feminists on the other hand believe society is shaped by a combination of ruling class and patriarchal ideology, whilst black feminists focus on how racist ideology effects the experience of ethnic minority women
