EXISTENCE OF GOD
The cosmological arguement
the first cause arguement
chain of events- dominoes
Aquinas asked, "why is there something rather than nothing"
universe must have been created by something:
not physical
not timebound
not caused
Strengths
Reason and logic used to prove God
uses the principle of cause and effect (science) to prove the existence of God
Weaknesses
Maybe things outside Earth may not have a cause
Things outside of our world work different
we cannot jump to conclusions
maybe things have existed to infinity
if God is perfect, why is his creation imperfect
Kalam Cosmological Arguement
Everything that begins to exist has a cause
The universe began to exist
Therefore the universe has a cause
That cause is God
General arguments against belief in God
There is no empirical evidence
if there is a God, why is there so much suffering in the world
if God existed, why hasn't he proven himself
belief in a Deist God is logically possible
Deist- impersonal being- created the universe and left it to run
Why do we need to invent a God to make sense of what we don't know
If there was a perfect God, everyone would know him and follow just one set of rules rather than belief in so many different Gods
The teleological arguement
the design arguement
Paley's watch
a watch needs a maker
universe is so complex, must have a creator
designer must be God
Aquinas' arrow
an arrow cant reach a target by itself
The arrow is designed to reach the centre of the target
God designed the arrow and fired it to reach the centre of the target
Strengths
The world is very intricate and everything is just perfect
just the right balance of chemicals for evolution, world designed for evolution
weaknesses
why would God design natural disasters
God would have done a better job
evolution
religious experiences
religious experiences come from God
God must exist
people have religious experiences
might not be God
hallucinations can cause visions
mental illness
some people dont have religious experiences
why does it happen to some and not others
mainly religious people
evidence and proof
Evidence
something that supports a claim
Proof
something which guarantees a claim is true
empirical evidence
physical evidence
sight
smell
touch
cannot be used to prove GOD
God is non-pysical
logic and reason
only this can prove God's existence
if God is spiritual then he cannot be proved by physical things
how valid is it?
Faith and knowledge
faith
leap into the unknown and unknowable
I believe it rained
eg
the call of abraham
Abraham left everything he owned for faith
he has faith
believes that it is God and will do anything
making him do stupid things
no knowledge that it is God
knowledge
based on facts
what can be proved
I know it rained
