Earth's history
time line
2.earliest life 3,900,000,000 years ago
- early land plants 420,000,000 years ago
- largest mass extinction 248,000,000 years ago
5.dinosaur extinction 65,000,000 years ago
- Lucy early hominid 4,000,000 years ago
- formation of the moon and earth 4,600,000,000 years ago

Trilobites ("three lobes") are so called because their bodies are divided into three lobes: a middle lobe and one on either side. They first appeared about 540 million years ago.
-
Brachiopods are marine animals that look a bit like clams. They are still common in cold waters today, but the height of their diversity occurred about 400 million years ago.
-
These are ammonites, a chambered mollusc not unlike the living Nautilus. Ammonites went extinct at the same time as the dinosaurs, about sixty-five million years ago.

The Phanerozoic Eon encompasses the period of abundant, complex life on Earth. It began with the start of the Cambrian period, 544 million years ago, when most of the major groups of animals first appear in the fossil record, and continues through today.
-
Proterozoic means "before animal life" which is actually not accurate, but most of the organisms were pretty simple. In addition to bacteria, we find things like algae and unusual worm-like creatures.
-
The term "Carboniferous" comes from England, in reference to the rich deposits of coal that occur there. One of the greatest evolutionary innovations of the Carboniferous was the amniote egg, which allowed the ancestors of birds, mammals, and reptiles to reproduce on land. We also see an increase in large insects and tree ferns.
-
Archean means original or ancient. This is a time when the first single-celled organisms, like bacteria, began to evolve.
-
Mesozoic means "middle life." Dinosaurs, cycads, and ferns were abundant during the Mesozoic.
-
Cenozoic means "recent life." Mammals, birds, flowering plants, and the ray-finned fishes all became more abundant during this time.
-
Paleozoic means "ancient life." Many animals of today originated then (during the Cambrian), like certain corals and brachiopods. Some, like relatives of the sponge and trilobites originated then, but later went extinct.
-
During the Permian, the land continents came together to form Pangaea; reptiles diversified; and the great forests of fern-like plants shifted to gymnosperms, plants with their offspring enclosed within seeds. The end of the Permian marked the largest mass extinction recorded in the history of life on Earth.

The eurypterids were one of the fiercest predators in ancient seas. Some reached more than two meters (six feet) in length, making them the largest arthropods that ever lived. The last ones went extinct about 245 million years ago.
- Archaeopteryx-an early bird
- Triceratops-ornithischian dino
Since the chemical composition has changed through time at a certain rate, we can determine how old rocks are by analyzing their chemistry. This process is called radiometric dating.
