Vocabulary and Reading Comprehension
Introduction
Intro to topic
L2 language learners tend to assume that vocabulary learning is just about memorisation
In fact, vocabulary memorisation is not sufficient to comprehend a reading text
The importance of the topic
Thesis statement
Vocabulary should be given more attention in language classroom because it is one of the most important element in enhancing reading comprehension
Outline
Contextualisation (placing the issue(s)/theme(s) in the broader area of applied linguistics)

How to teach vocab
One of the principles for teaching reading suggested by Nation (2008, p.7) is regarding meaning-focused input. He argues that "Reading should be used as a way of developing language proficiency. Learners should read with 98 percent coverage of the vocabulary in the text so that they can learn the remaining 2 percent through guessing from context"
In order to be able to teach vocabulary effectively, teachers should consider the elements of comprehensible knowledge of the words (Nunan, 2015, pp. 111-112)

Teaching vocabulary in context (Nunan, 2015, p. 112)
Thematic (Ellis & Shintani, 2014, p. 106)
"it will be easier to learn a set of unrelated words than a set of semantically related items." (Ellis & Shintani, 2014, p. 106
Focus on the most useful vocab first (Nunan, 2015, p. 113)
Learner strategies (Nunan, 2015, p. 113)
"To develop productive knowledge learners need to engage in production activities." (Ellis & Shintani, 2014, p. 108)
Repetition & spacing (Nunan, 2015, p. 114)
Why vocabulary enhances reading comprehension?
The biggest component of language learning
Meaning can get across through words not grammar or other element of a language
Definition
Vocabulary
Vocabulary is a set of lexemes that function as building blocks of a language
Type
"A learner’s receptive vocabulary consists of those words that he or she can recognise but not use. A productive vocabulary contains those words that a person can both recognise and use." (Nunan, 2015, p. 111)
