Participant
-
A Strength of this is that the observer is more likely to have a context for thing that hey observe (Reasons / Meaning)
-
Non-Participant
-
-
A weakness is that they are more likely to maintain objectivity because they are more distant from what they are seeing
Covert (Undisclosed)
-
-
A Weakness of this is that it denies a right to withdraw, Also cannot obtain informed consent
Overt (Disclosed)
-
a Weakness of this is that it is likely to involve demand characteristics therefore reduces validity
Ethical, right to withdraw, informed consent
Structured
Only predetermined behaviours are considered, Behavioural checklist, Coding System, Rating scale
A weakness is that only predetermines behaviours are considered and these may not be the most significant
-
-
Time (Sampling)
Predetermined behaviours are recorded at set intervals (Every 10 seconds) over the course of the observation
A weakness of this is that occurrences of behaviours may be missed if they occur in the intervals between sampling times
A strength of this is that the intervals between sampling times produce opportunitites to record data without distraction
Event (Sampling)
Predetermined behaviours are recorded each and every time they occur over the course of the observation
A Weakness of this is if behaviours happen frequently some occurrences may be missed while recording others.
A Strength of this is because observations is continuous and no occurrences of behaviours should be missed `
-
Naturalistic
-
A Strength of this is that it has High Ecological Validity so that we can generalise the findings to real life
