1st stage
You needed to pay for schooling
The teacher was known as a ludi magister
Girls sometimes went to school but most of them were trained as housewives
Class room was rented place or public square
Parents didn't have to send their kids to school
They only learnt to read and write and do simple arithmetic
The class had 30 pupils
The children would have been 7 years old
Children were taken to school and looked after by a Paedagogus
2nd Stage
Most children finished at 11
Children were taught little history and geography
The children were introduced to stories such as the Iliad and the Odyssey by Homer
Rich children would have gone to a more advanced school run by a grammiticus
They would have left school at 15 or 16 years old
Children had to learn passages by heart
The children then learnt about Greek tragedies
Writing tools
Used a bit of metal to engrave words
Used a tabulae (a wood tablet)
Piece of metal could rub out the inscription
Used ink to write on papyrus paper
Used a stilus with a tablet
3rd Stage
It was focused on public speaking
A few students then went to a school run by a rhetor
Children became amazing speakers here
The rhetor was highly educated and gave advanced lessons in literature
