Weather radar
-
-
UK Radar network
Currently: 18 radars, 15 operated by MetOffice
-
-
-
How does Radar work?
-
-
-
RHI- Range Height Indicator- one angle up and down (slice of the cloud)--> scan is slower= better picture of cloud
-
-
Radar sends out pulses of radio waves, they bounce back from targets in the atmosphere and the radar measures the intensity/ power reflected back
The larger and more rain droplets there are, the greater intensity
Dual-polarisation radar
-
Extra info is provided by dual polarisation which helps to correct errors in general radar measurements
-
-
-
Droppler velocity
-
-
-
Droppler velocity provides info on the wind field as well as identifying features such as tornados and gust fronts
Clean Air Data
-
Radar reflects back from insects- air starts to converge and is forced upwards to form a thunderstorm
When rainfall rains heavily, cold air pushes outwards away from the storm --> converges w/ insects and environment --> forms convergence lines
