Low level clouds are within boundary layer, below 2000m

On IR satellites, low level clouds are warm--> grey
in visible satellites, thick clouds are white, cumulus patchy but thin clouds usually grey and uniform
High level clouds
Cirrostratus- thin transparent sheet, can be up to 1000m deep, halo may be seen
Cirrocumulus- thin white patches, dappling from convective overturning and ripples from gravity waves
