Summative
Prepares students for test taking skills. Occurs at the end of a large chunk of learning and provides a criteria for high quality learning.
Final exams, standardized tests, research projects, etc.
Formative
Process of gathering information on student learning while providing feedback, adjusting instruction, and helping learners change their behaviors.
Discussions, quiz, observations, questioning, mastery of learning, etc.

Diagnostic
Examine what a student knows and is capable of before a learning program is implemented. This provides a baseline to what the student's skills and knowledge are.
Unit pre-assessment, placement tests, self-diagnostic tools, personality assessments, etc.
Performance
Also known as 'authentic' assessments, that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a list.
