short term causes of the civil war 1640-1642
event 2 the trial and execution of stratford the long parliament
charles still needed money in summer 1640 the scots invaded again this was the second bishops war
the scots defeated the english and they demanded that he pay 850
november 1640 charles called parliament back up
the mp saw an opportunity to remove charles advisers even though they were still loyal to the king
parliament ordered that laud was to be sent to the tower of london
that left stratford who was hated by parliament because he had told charles to rule without parliament and also that he would bring an army form ireland to support charles which made parliament very upset
parliament passed an act to say that parliament was a traitor charles was forced to sign it and then the following day stratford was killed
event 1 the short parliament 1640
charles needed money in april 1640 he called parliament but many mp supported the scots
they criticised laud and refused to give charles any money they would only do so if they dealt with there complaints and then they would give him money
he said no and then he dissolved parliament after 3 weeks
event 3 parliament stronger 1641
after stafford died a group of mp lead by john pym past laws to reduce the kings power
1 Triennial Act which meant that parliament had to be called every 3 years even if the king dint want it
2 they past an act which said that parliament couldn't be demised unsells parliament agreed
3 they abolished the kings courts
4 john pym wrote the 10 propositions this suggested parliament should choose the kings ministers
chalres had had enough he went to scotland for 6 weeks
when he came back parliament passed the grand remonstrance act this said that they would choose his ministers
Event 4:: The Irish Rebellion 1641
November 1641 - Irish Catholics rebelled and killed Protestants in Ireland.
There were rumours both that Charles was sympathetic to the Catholics, and that the Catholics would cross to England and massacre people there.
Parliament Raised an army but they did not trust Charles with it.
Event 5: The attempted arrest of 5 MPs January 14th 1642
Charles thought some of the MPs were plotting with the Scots behind his back. He was also fed up with the criticism of his wife.
The where rumours that Parliament wanted to impeach her [put him on trial]
He demanded Parliament impeach 5MPs he blamed for the plot.
He took 300 soldiers on the 5th June and entered Parliament. But the MPs had been tipped-off and they fled.
The MPs were angry because the King had entered Parliament.
Event 6: Militia Ordinance: March 1642
Parliament issued a militia ordinance without the King knowing. This was the first time a law had been passed without the King knowing.
It said they had to fight for Parliament if there was a war.
Charles then did exactly the same thing.

these where issued by parliament they suggested that charels should give up some of his powers
1 the right to make war
2 the right to choose the ministers
3 the right to decide on religion
4 the right to arrange his kids education
event 8 1642
parliament raised there own little army and it was under the control of the earl of essex
event 9 august 1642
charles raised his own standard (own flag) he expected the country to support him
event 10 parlements declartaion 6 september
Parliament said anyone who didn't support them would would have to pay for the war. Many of the gentry were pushed in to supporting Charles.
