Opening Questions

1. Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is used throughout a lesson to check for quick understanding in order to modify instruction during a lesson if needed.
Examples: Thumb up, thumb down; Exit Ticket
3. Summative
Definition: A summative assessment is used at the end of a unit to evaluate student learning. Unlike a formative assessment where there is no or very little point value, there is often a high point value associated with a summative assessment.
Examples: State-mandated assessments (STAAR), End-of-Unit exam
5. Interim/Benchmark
Definition: An interim assessment is used to see where students are in their learning process, as well as, determine if they are on track in their learning. A benchmark is used to see if students are meeting state standards.

2. Diagnostic
Definition: A diagnostic assessment is used as a pre-assessment to determine student's strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to the lesson.
Examples: Pretests, practical activities and questioning
4. Performance
Definition: Performance assessments require students to perform a task instead of choose a given answer. These are a great way for students to show mastery in specific skills and content.
Examples: Open-ended questions, essays, creating models
Assessment Data
Assessment data is used to modify instruction, detect student's strengths and weaknesses, and monitor student progress.
