Summative
used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period.

Formative
helps monitor student learning to provide ongoing feedback that instructors use to improve teaching and student learning.
Examples: Think, Pair, Share - where students work together to think about whats being asked of them and then sharing their answers.
Another example is exit tickets- these are given at the end of the lesson to see what the student learned from the given topic.

Performance
a form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list.

Diagnostic
Also known as preassessments help measure what the students already know / their skills prior to instruction.
Examples: Discussion Responses and student interviews to see what the students already know.
Assessment data: helps determine the next steps for teachers and the students individually or for the whole class instruction.
