The 2 conferences after WW2
Potsdam July 1945
Stalin
Stalin at this time basically controlled all of Eastern Europe with the Red Army including Poland.
Stalin wanted serious reparations from Germany to pay for the 20 million or so deaths of the Russian Army. But the other two disagreed as they had seen what that had done for the treat of Versailles. Hyper inflation of Germany.
Stalin also wanted Germany to be crippled so it could never rise to power again. However Truman disagreed
Churchill/ Atlee
Churchill was only present for some of the talks. As a general election was happening in Britain and Churchill lost, a lot of this was due to the British publics view on Churchill they lost faith in him. Clement Atlee was the new Prime minister, however this is where Britain's significance in the Cold War leaves.
Truman
Truman took over from Vice President as it happens when a President dies in office. Roosevelt died of Polio, this was an inexperienced political leader for America. Therefore Truman wanted to look strong for America and therefore went in with his iron fist policy. Lots of Americans believed that Roosevelt was too lenient on Stalin in Yalta.
Truman tried to confront Stalin by informing him about the successful testing of the nuclear bomb. Which gave forth the term nuclear diplomacy, where America had atom bombs that could be used to pressure countries. But when he informed Stalin about the bombs, Stalin shrugged being unsurprised. Because his spies had already told him about the bombs.

They did agree to
4 zones being created in Germany. One controlled by America, and the other 3 being controlled by; Britain, France and Russia
Germany to be de-Nazified
To hold free elections in Poland
Russia was only allowed to take reparations from soviet controlled Germany and 10% of its industry.
Yalta- February 1945
It was clear by now that Germany was going to lose the war, so America, Russia and Britain sat down in Yalta to think about what should happen to Europe after the war.
Stalin
One of Stalin's main aims was to take control of Poland to be made into a buffer zone for Russia. It was key as previous invasions of Russia had all been made through Poland and therefore Stalin wanted protection against future invasions.

Although some disagreements with the allies, Stalin did agree on joining the Pacific war against the Japanese Empire.
Roosevelt
Roosevelt at this time of age was dreadfully ill with polio. On the 12th of April 1945 Roosevelt would die and be replaced by Vice President Harry Truman.
Roosevelt only agreed to this type of thing from Stalin because he wanted Russia to stay away from British controlled Greece.
Churchill
Churchill did not agree with Stalin's plan to make Poland into a buffer zone. However he knew that he had no real objection since the Red Army occupied Poland.
