Benchmarks, CBA (Curriculum Based Assessments) STAAR
Performance A form of testing that requires students to perform a task rather than select an answer from a ready-made list. Experienced raters--either teachers or other trained staff--then judge the quality of the student's work based on an agreed-upon set of criteria.

Diagnostic A form of pre-assessment that allows a teacher to determine students' individual strengths, weaknesses, knowledge, and skills prior to instruction; primarily used to diagnose student difficulties. Examples Pretests to gather information about students' prior knowledge or to plan interventions or how to differentiate instruction. Observations to determine how to best present content.
Formative Assessments Defined
The shared process of gathering purposeful and systematic measurement for documentation, reflection, and improvement of both student learning and institutional practices. Examples Observation, Discussions, Homework Assignments
Summative Assessments Defined Cumulative evaluations used to measure student growth after instruction and are generally given at the end of a course in order to determine whether long term learning goals have been met. They are often high stakes and worth a large portion of points. Examples Midterm exams and End-of-Unit Exams
