Harlows Monkeys
Procedure
Had a dummy made out of wire and another made from cloth
Then let the monkey choose which they preferred in different situations.
Showing who they were attached to
Cloth = comfort
Wire = food
Evaluation
Supports Bowlby’s evolutionary theory of attachment.
As attachment is about comfort not food
Contradicts the Learning Theory
May not be possible to generalise research from animals to humans.
Conclusion
The infant becomes attached to the mother who makes it feel safe
Not to the mother that feeds it
Ethical issues
Possible monkeys were psychologically and emotionally harmed
Today the BPS guidelines would not have been met if this study was replicated today
Aim
To test whether attachment is just to the person who feeds the child.
Findings
Although the monkey was raised and fed by the metal mother it went to the cloth monkey for safety.
