Bowlbys Maternal deprivaion hypothesis
If short term separation is prolonged it may lead to deprivation in later life
Bowlby suggests that attachment is “Vital for healthy social and emotional development”.
Bowlby’s 44 Juvenile Thieves
compared a sample of 44 thieves and their backgrounds with a group of 44 non delinquent children
carried out interviews with the 2 groups about their childhood
also interviewed their mothers
Findings
Most of the theves had experienced early separation in life
classified the 44 theives as affectionless psychopaths= lacked a moral conscience
conclusion
separation in early life led to long term effects
such as delinquency and a lack of moral conscience
Once this attachment has been broken it cannot be fixed
