Weaknesses in the boom
Some industries fell because of others succeeding (coal as other fuels where being used and the textiles industry fell)
Some companies couldn't export goods because of tariffs put on them leading to over production and loss of consumers
Farmers had produced too much food and because of tariffs and competition rom Canadian farmers struggled to see it (1919 the income of farmers was $22 billion which then in 1928 fell to $13 billion
The wealth of the USA was very unequally spread for example 5% of the countries population owned 32% of the wealth.
Society in the 1920's
There began t be a lot of contrast such as races, wealth and women began to become more free

Before the first world war 850,000 imigrants a year came to America then in 1929 only 150,000 came each year
In 1924 the amendment to the immigration act meant the majority of new immigrants came from Britain , Iranian and Germany (WASPs) rather than the east
-
It was formed to terrorise the African Americans but when immigration became very dominant started with them

In 1925 there where 5 million members compared to 100,000 in 1920
Prohibition and Crime
By the end of the first world war there was a ban on alcohol (the Volstead act) prohibiting the sale and production of alcohol in 1919.
However it was illegal it didn't stop people just made more underground bootleggers who made lots of money smuggling alcohol and brewing it.
Law enforcement also didn't like this because they took bribes and where very corrupt (taking bribes). Not many agents supported it but some people like Elliot Ness.
Lots of gangs exploited this and started to run the alcohol and other forms of crime like gambling, prostittion and drugs
