Incr blood uric acid levels caused by over-production of uric acid or the inability of the kidneys to remove it.
Incr uric acid can cause crystals to form in joints --> joint infl & pain characteristic of gout.
Can also form crystals/stones that damage the kidneys
Synovial Fluid Analysis
Indications:
joint infl where gout or pseudo-gout is suspected
Septic arthritis
Suspected hemearthrosis
Arthrocentesis:
Do not pass a needle into the joint through overlying cellulitis
Caution with pts on anticoag
Gout - negative birefringent crystals
pseudogout - positive birefringent calcium pyrophosphate dihydrate crystals
