The Peatlands
What is a peat?
Peat is partly decomposed plant material which has been compressed under water logged conditions. It is mostly black in colour
An example of a peatland area I see in Nothern Ireland is Peatland park, near Dunganon
Why is it unique?- peats bogs have taken a very long time to form- at an average of one cm every ten years. It would take 100 years for 1 metre to form

How an eco system works
It all starts with the plants...
plants are really smart. They do something no other living creature things can do
-
-
1.The plants trap the sun's energy in chlorophyll, the green stuff in leaves
-
-
- It combines glucose with minerals from the soil to grow.
the minerals it needs are called nutrients, they include nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus

Being a decomposer
Fungi and bacteria in the soil feed on dead animals, droppings and other waste material. They make things rot. They are recyclers
-
What is an eco system?
LEARN- An eco system is a living community of plants and animals and the environment (home) in which they live

The recyclers
In the end, every living thing dies, and becomes a feast for the decomposers and they recycle
When they make material rot, they release the nutrients from it. These sink back into the soil and get used all over again
