Skin and blood
Components
Basophils
- Cytoplasm packed granules, single lobed nucleus, immunity to parasites (IgE)
Monocytes
- Precursors macropahge, long lived, in tissues chronic inflammation, phagocytosis, kidney bean shaped nucleus
Eosinophils
- Short lived, allergy, bilobed nucleus, granulocyte
Platelets/thrombocytes:
- Clotting, no nucleus, glycogen granules, not actuall cells
Neutrophils
- Short lived, multilobed nucleus, phagocytosis, acute inflammation + granulocyte
Lymphocytes
- B or T cells, spherical nucleus
Layers
Stratum granulosum
- Flattened keratinocytes undergoing apoptosis. Deeper active strata and dead superficial cells
Stratum spinosum
- Keratinocytes producing keratin
- Intraepidermal macrophages + melanocytes projection found
stratum lucidum
- Thick skin, flattened kertainocytes
Stratum basale
- Single raw cuboidal or columnar layer kertainocytes.
- Melanocytes and tactile epithelial cells also found here
Stratum corneum
- Flattened keratinocytes
- Protection injury + microbial invasion
Types of cells
Melanocytes
- Skin pigment, absorbs UV light
- CLuster to form protective wall
- Dendritic cells, long processes between keratinocytes
- Melansoomes produce, store and transport melanin
-
Keratinocytes
- Produce keratin: fibrous protein
- Lamellar granules: release sealant to reduce water entry and entry of foreign materials
- 90% epidermis
-
-
Dermis
- Blood vessels, nerve, mast cells, fibroblasts, macrophages and dermal dendritic cells
- Structural support + nutrition
- Mucopolysaccharide held together by collagen and elastin containing fibrous matrix
- Basement mebrane separates epidermis and dermis: control traffic of cells and oelcules binding through variety of cytokines and growth factors
- Sabaceous glands: Produce serum, increase secretion via androgens and growth hormone, oesrogen has inhibitory effect
-
Temp regulation
- Evap cooling affter ECCRINE sweating (sweat glands skin)
- Vasoconstriction
- Vasodilation
- Piloerection
Composition
55% plasma<1% WBCs and platelets
Top to bottom: Epidermis
- Stratum Corneum (dead keranocytes)
- Stratum lucidum
- Stratum granulosum (lemaellar granules)
- Stratum spoinosum
(langherhan cells)
- Stratum basale
