LU10: Nervous System (51494, 54020)
Nervous System
- Neural network that coordinate voluntary & involuntary actions between different body parts
- 3 Functions:
i. Sensory Input
ii. Integration
iii. Motor output
-
Motor Neurons
ii) Autonomic Nervous System
- Regulates involuntary actions (e.g. hormone secretion & peristalsis)
-
i) Somatic Nervous System
- Regulates voluntary actions (e.g. walking)
Neurons (nerve cells)
- The structural & functional unit of NS
- Communication is sent through neurons in the form of nerve impulse
-
Types of Neurons
i. Sensory (afferent) Neurons
- take nerve impulses from sensory receptors to CNS
ii. Interneurons
- occur entirely within CNS
iii. Motor (efferent) Neurons
- carry nerve impulses **from CNS to muscles / glands
Receptor Mechanism
-
-
Sensory adaptation (decrease responsiveness during continuous stimulation) is a type of receptor integration
-
-
-
Saltatory Conduction
In myelinated axons, gated ion channels that produce action potential are concentrated at the nodes of Ranvier
-
