Unit 12- Stress and Health
Stress is any circumstance that threatens persons well being.
Stress is reffered as a physical illness
When stressed ability to cope is imparied
Stress is adaptive, and can become maladaptive.
If stress prolonged increases risk of illness and health problems ex: heart disease and depression
Distress- Bad stress ex: accident
Eustress- good stress ex: husband finds out wife is pregnant.
Fight or Flight response triggers epinephrine and norepinephrine from adrenal glands, increasing heart and respiration rates, mobilizing sugar and fat, and dulling pain
Cannon- Fight or flight is physiological reaction that occurs in response to a event, threat, or harm.
How body responds to stress:
1) alarm reaction -stress occurs when we respond
2) resistance- deal with stress
3) exhaustion- stress either ends or body gives up
Selye- General Adaptation Syndrome is three stages individual goes through to respond to stress.
Stress Response triggered sends signals to the pituitary gland and the adrenal medulla.
Long term stress regulated by Hypothalamic Pituitary-Adrenal system
Positive stress can help performance and, improve motivation.
Takes time for body to calm down after stress response has been triggered
The stress that arises from choosing one alternative means foregoing another.
Approach Approach Conflict- A conflict arising from having to choose between equally desirable alternatives. 2 good things.
Avoidance Avoidance Conflict - conflict from having to choose between undesirable alternatives. 2 bad things.
Approach Avoidance Conflict- Conflict when the same choice has both desirable and undesirable features. 1 good and 1 bad.
Double Approach Avoidance- two situatutions that both contain 1 good and 1 bad.
Stressors- Any stimulus capable of impacting mental health and producing physical or emotional stress.
