Aim
Test whether MBSR works
Procedure
Participants: med students
Equal # of males and females
randomly assigned MBSR or "waitlisted"
self report evaluating stress initial (before course) and final (after course, during exams)
Results
No diff between 2 groups @ beginning
waitlist: more anxiety / stress during finals
MBSR less anxious, higher scores on empathy questinnaire
Conclusion
MBSR taught students to cope effectively
Evaluation
can't be generalized/ not representative (only med students tested)
Motivation of participants: for course credit
controlled experiment, participants unaware of experiment
Evaluation
MBSR effective, time efficient
Requires motivation of people
More research can be used to improve
Could be more effective in combo w/ other methods

reviewed 20 controlled studies
results: MBSR helpful, versatile
positive overall
