The Benefits of Doing Group Work in College Classes
reason 1 It helps the students to learn together in a way that the professor cant teach them
Some students space out when they are just hearing the professor lecture, but the group work forces them to interact to learn
college students are from all walks of life so there is added perspectives
more perspective = more knowledge
A professor probably has 30 emails a day with the same question,"What were we supposed to do?"
With groups, the students form little chat groups for the class or can message eachother about what they missed to help one another
This will help the professor not have to answer the same question
reason 2
Students develop social skills regardless of the subject.
Group work teaches the value of teamwork and integrity because you have to do your own part to contribute for the grade
But more importantly, some college students still haven't really learned how to work in a group or force themselves to put themselves out there, skills important in the working world to survive
You can tell because whenever a professor asks everyone to form in groups, everybody kind of hesitates.
Not like high school where teachers just assigned people together so that there wouldnt be a disruption.
It's important to be able to socialize and not be afraid to ask something when you don't know the answer and help others along the way
working in groups forced me out of my comfort zone of being on my own into talking to people I don't know which is something I don't like to do but also caused me to not be good at it sometimes
Students can teach eachother and can provide explanation in a more relateable language than the professor can because of the age difference.
I remember in my English composition class we had to form up in groups and its
My experiences
I've seen that a professor will give the instructions and then we form into groups and more than half the group doesn't even know what to do.
That just goes to show how much information is absorbed from the professor speaking
If it wasn't for the group and at least one person knowing the instructions, all those students would be lost
