Young Carer
Impacts
Physical – Tired due to spending energies on working on school matters and the caring role. May have disturbed sleep pattern as a result of the caring role.
Intellectual – may be missing out on school work and on occasions, some of the lessons. Some of the additional/ extra-curricular activities may not be accessible by the young carer due to time and financial pressures
Financial – Less money coming into the house since at least one parent will be not working as a result of needing a carer.
Emotional - Down/sad/upset. Anxious/worried/stress. Reduced self-esteem/self-worth/self-concept. Self-confidence. Depression. Resentment/guilt
Social: Effect of relationship with parent – if appropriately described. Not spending as much time with friends as she would like. To some extent feeling isolated from others.
Barriers
Employment – parents being cared for may find it hard to find a job which they could consistently do
Education – lack of awareness and support by the school so young carer falls behind due to absences/missed lessons/poor concentration. Effect on future educational opportunities. Affects relationships with staff at school (who may not know of the young carer’s status)
Societal – socially excluded. Teachers’ lack of understanding/lack of awareness. Lack of support. Prejudice/ discrimination
Economic – loss of earnings (if parent used to work). May require specialist support which might not be provided by the state. Problem accessing benefit if not able to complete forms/ lack of knowledge about how to access benefits. Young carer may be unable to access part-time work less money for the household.
