Ferdinand Magellan was the first to circumnavigate the world
Vasco de Gama was the first to find sea route to Asia
Henri Hudson was a sea explorer
Many explorers made important discoveries
Portugal and Spain
Spanish were focused on finding new western trade route to Asia
Wanted to get rich off of new colonies
First to use african slave trade
Spain and Portugal were both interested in spreading Catholic religion throughout the world
Trade was most important to them
France and England
Native American Allies
England created most permanent settlements/colonies in the New World
France created a fur trade network in the mississippi valley
Both initially tried to find trade routes to north America
France also waned to spread religion to the new world
