Negatives:
Seperate courts for peasants meant they were outside the mainstream legeal system, emphasising their lower class.

Positives:
Russians could get a farier trial, with less corruption and greater access to justice.
JPs courts worked quickly, and cost nothing to those appearing in them. They were respected because they protected the average peasant.
By the 1870s a articulate legal profession had taken hold who were trained in the skills of persuasion and argument. Many went onto to work in the Duma or became revolutionaries.
Reforms challenged the political authority of the autocracy in a number of ways:
- The independance of courts and judges meant there was another authority to the Tsar, the regime couldn't interfere.
- Court became a space to challenge the government if nessecary, defence lawyers were often critical of the government when presenting their case.
- Juries were able to acquit individuals who the government would have liked to see behind bars for a long time.
