PNS

CNS

  • Brain + spinal cord
  • Integrating, processing + coordinating sensory data + motor commands
  • Higher fucntions
  • All neural tissue EXCEPT brain + spinal cord
  • Delivers sensory info to CNS and moror demans to peripheral tissues + systems

Efferent

Afferent

  • Sensory info to CNS from receptors in peripheral tissues + organs
  • Carry motor commannds from CNS to miscles + glands

Somatic nervous system

  • Skeletal contractions

Autonomic nervous system

  • Smooth muscle, cardiac muscle + glandualr secretions

Parasympathetic division

Sympathetic Division

Sympathetic chain ganglia
Ganglion synapses on sympathetic chain

Thoracic

Lumbar

Cervical

Sacral

3: Superior, middle + inferior

T2-T11 (thoracolumbar outflow)

Short pre-ganglionic
CNS - PNS - Target

Splanchnic Nerves

  • Abdominopelvic viscera with sympathetic innervation
  • Preganglionic fibres pass through sympathtic chain without synapsing
  • Synapse in separate collateral ganglia
  • Postganglionic fibres leave collateral ganlia: innervate visceral tissues + organs within abdominopelvic cavity

Three splanchnic nerves

Lesser splanchnic Nerve

Least Splanchnic nerve

Greater Splanchnic nerve

  • T5- T9
  • Synapse coeliac ganglion
  • Supplies foregut viscera
  • T10
  • Aorticorenal ganglion
  • Midgut viscera
  • T12
  • Renal ganglion
  • Kidneys + upper ureter

PSNS
CN 3, 7, 9 and 10
Craniosacral outflow (Brainstem + Lateral horn grey matter S2-S4)

  • Preganglionic neurons in brain stem + sacral segments of spinal cord
  • Within or adjacent target organs
    • Contrast sympathetic division: neurons within ganglion all have same target organ + do not mix with neurons within other ganglia
  • Long preganlgionic fibres + short postganglionic fibres
