Early life
as a young man, very influnced by the work of Caravaggio, an Italian painter
His early work included rich colors and shade
father was a miller
he would later move to Amsterdam to pursue his career as a painter
Born in Leiden in 1606
Later years
wife and three children died
towards the end of life became very tired of work
he died in 1669

worked as portrait painter
made alot of money, selling his work to rich merchants and religious subjects
moved in 1631
