The Chinese Communist and the Nationalist party used to be one big army but conflicts began arising. One side wished to have China become a nationalist country, and one side wanted China to be communist. When the Nationalist Party turned on the Chinese Communist Party they killed and purged (an abrupt or violent removal of a group of people from an organization or place) the communist party.

The Domino theory- This theory ran most of the U.S foreign policy which began around the 1950's. This theory states that any communist victory could lead to communism taking over in surrounding areas and countries.
The Soviet Union was communist so many feared that if the Soviet Union got a victory that many surrounding countries would turn to communism creating the Domino effect as it would continue grow larger outside other countries also.
When the Chinese Communist Revolution began in 1949 the leader of the Chinese Communist Party tried to get everyone in China to accept communism. The nationalist group who had lost the civil war were retreated to the island of Taiwan together. The leader of the Chinese Communist Party soon took over Taiwan while continuing spreading the acceptance of Communism. Mao Zedong, the leader of the Chinese Communist Party, wished to restore power and prestige to China.
In today world Mao's PCR still exists but only in mainland China. China's new territories such as Taiwan are controlled by the Republic of China, a democratic government.
Basics
Before 1949 China was in a civil war between the Chinese Communist Party and the Nationalist Party. In 1949 the Chinese Communist Party leader declared the creation of the People's Republic of China (PRC). The Chinese communist leader declared the nation as Communist. The communist party had won.
Both America and the Soviet Union became involved in the conflict in China. America was afraid of the spread of communism so began sending money to help the Nationalist Party.
